Why is improvisation important

Born and raised in Bridgeport Connecticut, Joshua is a newcomer to the Tucson area. Back east, he was active on the gigging scene, playing throughout Connecticut as well as some of the most popular venues in New York City for jazz and experimental music. Being a in demand freelance player, he is very knowledgeable in a variety of styles, and approaches them with respect, whatever the genre.

Teaching has always been a big part of what he does. Having taught at many local studios and taught many private lessons in the Connecticut and New York area, he has a ton of experience in conveying ideas to students new to the drums, of all ages.

He feels teaching is a big part of the experience of being a musician, and loves to share his knowledge with as many people as he can. Joshua is really passionate about sharing his love for the instrument, and helping people develop their unique way of musically expressing themselves.

In today's busy world it can be hard to shut out the noise and be aware of the present moment, whether you're in the workplace or on stage. Listening skills help you silence the noise of your own thoughts so you can hear and be present with another--and improvisation helps you build those skills in a creative and innovative way. Both acting and business require collaborative skills. In both fields a well-rounded team is composed of people with differing abilities, personalities and life experiences, working together and having each other's respect and attention.

Understanding each member's strengths and weaknesses is crucial when it comes to keeping your team effective and happy. Improv requires flexibility and agility--when something isn't working, the actors often have to change things up on the fly. In acting, you learn that change is just another part of the process of getting it right. In business, implementing even positive change can be challenging. But when leaders know how to communicate they know how to address their people in a way that empowers and includes them, bringing them along and making them feel they are part of something bigger than themselves.

A great ensemble is key to successful improvisation. And the same, of course, is true for business and leadership. On stage, each team member has a part to play and a role to execute. If you can make each person on your team feel important and purposeful, you'll have a team with nothing but stars. I feel that the art of improvisation is just that, with the ultimate goal of achieving a unique result.

You have to work at it and it may not come easily. With that in mind, you should always try to be a student. Having that knowledge tucked away in your back pocket allows you to push the boundaries of improvised creativity. You have to shake off that path. This is something I do constantly to foster creativity. For example, I might take a piano chord and reverse it in my DAW, then blend in a large amount of reverb and delay.

From there, I might route it into a guitar amplifier plugin and add an unusual amount of distortion and edge. What may have started out as a nice piano chord for a travel documentary might now be better suited for a crime drama or police show — all because I was able to bend, break and blend it. As I mentioned earlier, learning how to improvise not only can help your music, it can enhance your life generally. In the kitchen, I tend not to follow recipes exactly when cooking.
