Although Pistons fans will always rue the day they took Luke Kennard over Donovan Mitchell, that doesn't mean that Kennard is a bad pro. In fact, he's got a shot to be a high-end role player for many years to come, especially after averaging The Heat will take him here and put him in the Duncan Robinson role.
Monte Morris is arguably the best backup point guard in the NBA. These past two seasons, he's averaged 9. Josh Hart was a steal for the Lakers at no. Hart had a career-year last season that saw him average His attacking style and excellent rebounding from the wing position makes him a valuable rotation piece.
If he can improve his three-point shooting just a bit The Bucks take a big swing here and hope that Jonathan Isaac stays much healthier in this alternate reality. Isaac has twice appeared poised for a breakout, and twice suffered serous knee injuries, with the most recent one coming in the bubble a torn ACL and meniscus that will likely keep him out for the season. When healthy, Isaac is one of the best, and most versatile defenders in the NBA.
The Indiana Pacers value big men more than most teams do today, so it makes sense for them to grab a solid two-way big like Zach Collins at no. Collins has had some injury issues, but his stretch-five skill set on offense That Hawks don't get quick so fortunate as to land John Collins this time around. But, they do get a player with a lot of upside in Markelle Fultz.
Fultz notoriously developed the yips and lost the ability to shoot early in his career with the 76ers. He's improved a little bit, but still only shoots If he never develops a shot, he'll end up being a similar player to Kris Dunn or Michael Carter-Williams. If he does develop a shot, he could be a huge steal this late in the draft.
Much like the Fultz pick above, the Blazers take a swing on the upside of Josh Jackson here at no. Phoenix definitely wasn't an ideal environment for Jackson, but he grinded in the G-League for most of last season, then flashed some ability in 22 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 9 ppg.
Perhaps the Blazers' strong, Damian Lillard-led culture keeps Jackson on the straight and narrow this time around. After a promising rookie season He went from starting a point guard for a promising team in Dallas to barely playing for arguably the worst franchise in the NBA in the Knicks.
There's a productive player in there somewhere. I don't know if any team will ever be able to summon it out of him at this point, but had a stable franchise like the Thunder drafted him out of NC State, his prospects would be much more promising. Original Pick: Terrance Ferguson. Once an elite high school prospect with Kevin Garnett-like potential, Harry Giles struggled to overcome his various knee injuries in high school and college, and fell to pick no.
He'll fall to no. In his two NBA seasons, Giles has flashed a little potential, averaging He projects to at least be a decent backup NBA big man, but perhaps Brooklyn can help get a little more out of Giles than Sacramento has thus far.
Malik Monk has been a massive disappointment for the Hornets thus far in his career. Yet, I can't entirely give up on a guy who had as many special performances in college as Monk did. I thought he had a chance to be a star lead guard at best, or a Lou Williams-type of sixth man off the bench at worst.
With their excellent player development system, the Raptors roll the dice on Monk and try to improve his defense and court awareness so he's on the court during the game's key moments. PJ Dozier 's numbers are unspectacular 5. If Denver didn't have such a deep roster, you'd have heard a lot more about the 6-foot-6 guard out of South Carolina. If you watched the Nuggets at all in the bubble playoffs, Dozier had an impact as a defender and do-it-all guard in key stretches of the series against the Jazz and the Lakers.
The Jazz will grab him at no. Frank Ntilikina, a. Frankie Smokes, is selected in a much more reasonable position this time around given the limited skill set he's displayed thus far in his career. Ntilikina is a strong defender, but a poor offensive player - his career offensive rating per possessions is 93 not great!!
Fox was surely tempting, but the thought of Jackson and Devin Booker running on the wings is tantalizing. The Kings coveted Fox throughout the predraft process and got their man at No. Fox is one of the fastest players in the draft with the ball in his hands, could become a high-level defender at his position and has star potential if his jump shot improves. This long, winding rebuild just got a lot more legitimate.
Orlando was rumored to have promised Isaac at this spot, and rolling the dice on his long-term potential makes a lot of sense for the Magic as they begin to chart course with Jeff Weltman and John Hammond running the show.
Isaac had a case as high as the third pick and in a different year would surely have gone higher but comes with more risk than the players selected before him given his slight frame and inconsistent play as a freshman for Florida State.
Grade: A-. The Timberwolves made this pick for the Bulls in a deal for Jimmy Butler. The returns on that trade are Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine and this selection, but the Markkanen selection is a questionable one for Chicago by any measure.
There are concerns that his defensive struggles could seriously limit his upside. Chicago rolled the dice, and surrendered its best player in the process.
New York needed to address its backcourt and did so here, although high-scoring and arguably stronger options Dennis Smith and Malik Monk were available. At the very least, fans can take solace in the fact Kristaps Porzingis appears to be staying put.
Dallas has been in search of a franchise point guard for a long time, and hopes Smith will be that. This is great value for the Mavericks, who gain a legitimate long-term asset as they continue to prepare for the post-Dirk era.
In a weaker draft, Smith might have been a top-five talent. It made little sense for the cap-starved Blazers to use all three of their first-round selections. Portland sent Nos. McCollum sooner rather than later. Charlotte planned to find a partner for Kemba Walker at this spot and also considered Donovan Mitchell.
This was the right choice. The Pistons were hoping someone would fall to No. Detroit needed floor-spacers, and gets a tough, intelligent player who should be solid, if not spectacular. Based on what was available, Kennard was a strong choice.
Mitchell was the top available guard, and fills a potential hole for Utah with George Hill potentially headed elsewhere.
Lyles showed some promise, but the Jazz acted decisively here for good reason. The Heat were in a tricky position at this spot, which is where value in the draft begins to get cloudy. Miami ultimately preferred the safety of this selection over a slew of other bigs on the board, and he should be a nice rotational player. The Kings made a nice decision to move down with no clear choice at No.
The idea of him as a shooter and defender remains a little stronger than his actual skill level at this stage. Grade: B-. Patton is a high-upside prospect who makes a lot of sense for Minnesota here. Patton has a lot of talent, particularly on offense, and will not need to be rushed thanks to the presence of Karl-Anthony Towns.
