At the far end of the lot begins the Briones Crest Trail. Take the stairs that lead downhill and along the entrance road. At trail marker 23 take a right onto Old Briones Road for a mere. Follow it. At trail marker 74, go straight thru a gate to join Table Top. At marker 71 take a right thru a cattle gate to access the Crescent Ridge Trail. Follow it along and downhill to the Briones Archery Range. Go along the fence line of the archery range and veer right onto the Seaborg Trail.

Take the Seaborg Trail. Blue Oak Trail. Length: 5. Seaborg and Mariposa Loop Trail. East Bay park offers ample solitude, abundant sunshine. Hikers gravitating to Tilden Park to the west and Mount Diablo to the east often overlook Briones, so you'll have plenty of time alone on the the trails. There's a Goldilocks "just right" quality about hiking at Briones: Hills seem to top off just before your workout becomes a wear-out. The spring wildflower display is big enough to justify a visit from February to May, but not so spectacular that it attracts big crowds you might find at more popular parks.

And it's only a few miles off Highway 24, the main route connecting Berkeley and Walnut Creek. Guide and Service dogs are free. With its rolling, grassy hills and secluded, shady canyons, Briones is a secret wilderness surrounded by the towns of central Contra Costa County. Although the park is close to Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Martinez, there are peaks within it from which you can see only park and watershed lands for miles in every direction.

Tamalpais to the west, and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness to the south. These leash-required areas are indicated by signage within the park. Briones' 6, acres are home to many animals and birds, which forage on the grasslands or find shelter among the oaks and bays. You may see black-tailed deer, coyotes, squirrels, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and if you are lucky, other more reclusive creatures. Take a guided hike with a naturalist to search for the local flora and fauna, including the local California Newts.

Briones Regional Park and many others rely on local volunteers to maintain the trails and do habitat restoration. There are even opportunities in their wildlife program.
