Result the lower birth passenger has either to bow and sit or lie down which is very very uncomfortable and inconvenient.
Image for reference. This will make all other guys in an awkward position if they want to sit on the lower birth. Better they sleep on their respective berths for comfort.
See below for an example. LHB coaches often has a shower for 1AC only. The Seats are Wider in 2ac than the 3ac' about six inches wider than 3ac. In the 1ac seats are almost three feet wide giving a better sleeping experience and of course privacy with a lockable door for each bay. There are no side seats also. They only have a common screen for the bay and separate curtains for the side seats. The side seats, however are of almost the same size as that in 3 ac or Sleeper coaches.
So I would not prefer side seats. Another tip.. If u r travelling alone book side berth in 3rd ac esp. An ardent Linux user. Comes from a business management background.

The compartments may seem crowded to some as there are 6 berths in the compartment, and 2 in the aisle bay. However, this crowd is still nothing when compared to the crowd in the non-air conditioned coaches, especially the unreserved class.
