The upside that reconfiguration, such as the adding or removing of a new node into the system, would only require the addition or removal of a connection segment and would not affect the entire network.

This type of topology relies heavily on a single communication line capable of data transmission in both directions. A central cable, also referred to as a backbone, connects to all the nodes in the network. One of the reasons it is a commonly used way to set up a LAN is because of its simple design requiring a continuous length of cable that ends with terminating resistors on each end.

However, tree networks are often referred to as a hybrid network,.
